Research Paper Narrative Part 1
Research Paper Narrative Part 2
Survey Questions and Summaries
On December 7, 2009 I received my Certified Public Manager certification. My final project involved a survey of public manager who also had experience managing in the private sector. The purpose of the survey was to explore the similarities and differences in managing and leading in the public sector verses the private sector. This research provided several insights, both expected and unexpected, into managing in both public organizations and private organizations. I believe the research provides lessons to learn for existing as well as future managers in both public and private leadership organizations.
The project is divided into three documents. The final research paper is broken into Part 1 and Part 2 due to its size, while the Summary provides the actual survey questions and a summary of the answers to each.
I want to thank the many people who assisted with the project. Thanks to the Texas City Management Association that helped by contacting managers about participating in the survey. Thanks to the hundreds of managers who responded with a willingness to participate, and thanks to the ninety-two managers who qualified themselves as having the appropriate experience to take the survey. Most of all thanks to the sixty-four managers who took the time and let me learn from their experience by taking the survey.
And a special thanks to the CPM course instructor, Thomas Longoria, without whose encouragement and guidance this project would not have happened.
And I could never have attempted the CPM course and this project without the patience and encouragement of my longsuffering wife, Beth.
